Transistorless Microchips

A group of electrical engineers at the University of Notre Dame have created a working prototype of a radical new chip design based on magnetism instead of electrical transistors.

History :
The potential of chips driven by nanoscale magnets was considered five years ago, scientists observed that the magnets could exchange information as their fields interacted with each other.

Although existing technologies use magnetic fields to store information on small chips called MRAMs, this is the first application to produce a chip that can process digital information in addition to storing it.

How it works :

The chip uses nanoscale magnetic "islands" to juggle the ones and zeroes of binary code.

It uses a process of magnetic patterning to produce a new chip that uses arrays of separate magnetic domains. Each island maintains its own magnetic field.

The magnets were created from ferromagnetic nickel/iron alloy, We evaporated a thin layer of the alloy onto a silicon surface, then patterned the islands using electron-beam lithography.

Advantages :

  1. Computers using the magnetic chips would boot up almost instantly.
  2. Because the chip has no wires, its device density and processing power may eventually be much higher than transistor-based devices.
  3. And it won't be nearly as power-hungry, which will translate to less heat emission and a cooler future for portable hardware like laptops.
  4. The magnetic chip's memory is nonvolatile, making it impervious to power interruptions, and it retains its data when the device is switched off.
  5. The magnetic architecture of the chip can be reprogrammed on the fly and its adaptability could make it very popular with manufacturers of special-purpose computing hardware, from video-game platforms to medical diagnostic equipment.
  6. The new chips also have some important characteristics that might make them ideal candidates for use in future space hardware. "You can't just put a regular DRAM into space, because it won't tolerate the environment. The magnetic technology is radiation-hard, and will be a huge improvement on what they're using now."

Indepth detail :

The chip's nanomagnets -- on the order of 110 nanometers wide -- can be assembled into arrays that mirror the function of transistor-based logic gates in addition to storing information. These logic gates are the building blocks of computer technology, giving microchips the power to process the endless rivers of binary code.

A NAND logic gate, for example, accepts two inputs to arrive at one output. If both inputs are one, the NAND gate spits out a zero. If one or the other or both inputs are a zero, the NAND gate provides a one as an output.

New chip works with a universal logic gate, a combination of the NAND and NOR gates. Together, these two logic gates can perform any of the basic arithmetic functions intrinsic to all computer processing.

Logic operations within the processor commence with a pulsed magnetic field on the input magnet, which alters the orientation of its magnetic field. This creates a cascade effect across the array, as magnetostatic attraction and repulsion cause the fields of adjacent magnets to "flip."

"To read the output, we used a scanning probe to infer what the magnetization was," said Porod. "Ideally, in the future, we would like to achieve this (input and output) with the simple application of an electric current."

Scanning electron microscope (or SEM) imagery shows the "magnetic islands" of a new chip design that are impervious to power loss.

A grouping of eight nanomagnets together are able to perform all mathematical calculations fundamental to Boolean logic.

The new improved Sania Mirza!

Sania Mirza may have crashed out the Wimbeldon's Singles Tournament after losing to the 11th seeded Nadia Petrova 6-2,6-2 in the second round. But there is no doubt that this the new & improved Sania we are watching play. She looks more fitter which can be attributed to her loss of weight as the difference is candid from the two pictures.
Previously:

It is remarkable that she was playing just 2 months after her knee surgery. Her forehand strokes were brilliant as usual & she manages to stay focussed for alonger time than before.
But all of you who missed the new & improved Sania in action, dont worry. She is through in the second round of doubles with her partner S.Peer. Also she is set to team up with Mahesh Bhupathi for mixed doubles at the same tournament.
We just hope that she continues to progress ahead in the same manner & make us Indians proud!

Chris Benoit & Family dead !!!!

Yes thats rite... The great WWE Superstar, Former World Heavyweight Champion & Former United States Champion is dead. Also found dead were his wife Nancy 7 year old Daniel. Police suspect it is a case of Double Murder - suicide within the family.

Chris Benoit also known as the rabid wolverine was known for his passionate wrestling & his submission hold - The crippler crossface !!! Chris Benoit had achieved many victories in the past in his long career at WCW followed by WWE !!!

Benoit was scheduled to perform at the "Vengeance" pay-per-view event Sunday night in Houston, but was replaced at the last minute because of what announcer Jim Ross called "personal reasons."

Benoit, a Canadian native, maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling.

The WWE canceled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the federation said in a statement on its Web site.

Whats Engineering?

Here are are a few quotes, how people defined engineering.

Engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practicing the art of the organized forcing of technological change... Engineers operate at the interface between science and society...
-Dean Gordon Brown

Engineering is the art of organizing and directing men and controlling the forces and materials of nature for the benefit of the human race.
-Henry G. Stott, 1907

Engineering is a great profession. There is the satisfaction of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realisation in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings homes to men or women. Then it elevates the standard of living and adds to the comforts of life. This is the engineer's high privilege.
-Herbert Hoover (1874 - 1964)

Engineers participate in the activities which make the resources of nature available in a form beneficial to man and provide systems which will perform optimally and economically.
-L. M. K. Boelter, 1957

The ideal engineer is a composite ... He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems.
-N. W. Dougherty, 1955

Engineering is an activity other than purely manual and physical work which brings about the utilization of the materials and laws of nature for the good of humanity.
-R. E. Hellmund, 1929

Engineering is the professional art of applying science to the optimum conversion of natural resources to the benefit of man.
-Ralph J. Smith

Engineering is the practice of safe and economic application of the scientific laws governing the forces and materials of nature by means of organization, design and construction, for the general benefit of mankind.
-S. E. Lindsay, 1920

The engineer is the key figure in the material progress of the world. It is his engineering that makes a reality of the potential value of science by translating scientific knowledge into tools, resources, energy and labor to bring them into the service of man ... To make contributions of this kind the engineer requires the imagination to visualize the needs of society and to appreciate what is possible as well as the technological and broad social age understanding to bring his vision to reality.
-Sir Eric Ashby

Engineering is the professional and systematic application of science to the efficient utilization of natural resources to produce wealth.
-T. J. Hoover and J. C. L. Fish, 1941

Engineering is the science of economy, of conserving the energy, kinetic and potential, provided and stored up by nature for the use of man. It is the business of engineering to utilize this energy to the best advantage, so that there may be the least possible waste.
-William A. Smith, 1908

The iPod, iPod Nano & iPod Shuffle

So everybody has heard about the iPod. When it comes to music players, the iPod is the first thing that comes to your mind. Right - now there are three versions of the iPod as i have mentioned in the title -

1) iPod (Also called the Video iPOD)
2) iPod Nano
3) iPod Shuffle

Now here's a note - i dont know whats the difference between them apart from the size. So i thought i'd find out n post it here so all you other people like me might understand. So here goes.

First let me tell you what the official Apple site had to say

iPOD
With enough room for your favorite music and video, this iPod has both sound and vision. Of course, it also boasts stamina (up to 20 hours1 of battery life), generous capacity (30GB or 80GB2 of storage), a great personality (intuitive, customizable menus), and a touch of genius (the Click Wheel). In other words, iPod makes an ideal companion.

iPOD NANO
Only 0.26 of an inch thin and 1.41 ounces light, iPod nano packs a lot into its diminutive design. Up to 24 hours of battery life.1 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB of storage.2 A brighter color display. A dock connector that fits an entire ecosystem of iPod accessories. With features like these, iPod nano changes the way you experience your music and more.

iPOD SHUFFLE
In five brilliant colors, the 1GB iPod shuffle lets you wear up to 240 songs1 on your sleeve. Or your lapel. Or your belt. Clip on iPod shuffle and wear it as a badge of musical devotion.

All rite now here's the comparision between the 3:

Storage:
iPOD: 30GB & 80GB
NANO: 2GB, 4GB & 8GB
SHUFFLE: 1GB

Display:
iPOD: 2.5inch
NANO: 1.5inch
SHUFFLE: no display

Photo & Video Support:
iPOD: Both
NANO: only photo
SHUFFLE: none

Charge Time:
iPOD: About 4 hrs
NANO: About 3 hrs
SHUFFLE: About 4hrs

Battery Life:
iPOD: Upto 14 (20 for 80GB) hrs of music playback; upto 4 (6 for 80GB) hrs of slideshows with music; upto 3.5 (6.5 for 80GB) hrs of video playback
NANO: Upto 24 hrs of music playback; upto 5 hrs of slideshows with music
SHUFFLE: Upto 12 hrs

Right now my conclusions -

If you want everything (as in music, pics n videos on the go) go for the IPOD. If you are looking for style (with only music) go for the SHUFFLE & otherwise the iPOD NANO. (Pretty Obvious huh !!!)

Here are the retail prices for the iPODS:

iPOD (Video)
30GB - $249 (Rs. 16700)
80GB - $349 (Rs. 23600)

iPOD NANO
2GB - $149 (Rs. 9800)
4GB - $199 (Rs. 13200)
8GB - $249 (Rs. 16400)

iPOD SHUFFLE - $79 (Rs. 5600)

(INR Source - www.futurebazaar.com)

If you live in India, i might as well recommend you ask someone to buy the iPOD for you from abroad cause the list price is much more than the converted price (USD)

SPURS sweep CAVS !!!

The San Antonio Spurs won their 4th NBA title by defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0 in a 7 game series. The Spurs have won all 4 of their appearances in the NBA Finals with previous titles won in 1999, 2003 & 2005. The Spurs have now joined the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls as the only teams in NBA history to win four titles.

Tim Duncan won his 4th NBA ring in his 10th year in the NBA. The 31 year old was ecstatic on the court when the final buzzer rang. Duncan, on the court to the final second, jumped up and down, caught teammate Bruce Bowen for a bear hug, and held his arms above his head as a champion once again. "It never gets old, it never gets old. Unbelievable,'' Duncan said. "Such a great run, a great journey, a great bunch of guys, it's unbelievable.'' Duncan, one of the best center/power forwards ever to play in the league, has led the Spurs with discipline, dedication and diligence. "We've come so far as a group of guys going through our ups and downs and learning from them. It is such a relief to finally get it done,'' Duncan said.

Parker, who averaged 24.5 points on 57 percent shooting, became the first European-born player to be honored as MVP. Parker won the MVP trophy, outplaying Tim Duncan who had won in the previous 3 championship wins. While Parker was handed over the trophy, his fiance was wiping off her tears.

Manu Ginobili was brilliant in the 4th Quarter scoring 13 of his 27 points. Spurs a truly professional side under coach Greg Popovich finsihed it off in style.

Its very easy to forget the Defensive Brialliance of Bruce Bowen - an outstanding and physical defender. Bruce had to guard some amazing players in the playoffs from Steve Nash, Deron Williams & Lebron James. His timely 3 pointers have helped SPURS a lot in crucial times especially in Game 3 when the big trio of Duncan, Parker & Ginobili were having a tough time scoring.

Robert Horry got his 7th ring - the most by a non Celtics player. He had won 1 with Housten Rockets in 1994 & 95, 3 with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000, 01 & 02 & 2 with the SPURS in 2005 & 07.

Michael Finley was the happiest of them all with his first NBA ring in the dying days of his glorious NBA career. Finley had no trophy to keep but he did get the game ball - "I might just put it in the bed between me and my wife," he said.

To conclude - I love the SPURS they are awesome and deserve to win the NBA title.

Formula One to come to India

India have finally been awarded a Formula One Grand Prix race after years of trying to join the F1 fraternity- said ESPN website on its home page.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi and was being flashed on all news channels.

Ecclestone CEO of Formula One had once said, "India is a country that is probably going to grow quicker than China". Giving India a F1 track- may be this is what he meant when he said this.

Ecclestone must have identified the sub-continent as one of the growth areas for motor sport's premier class, with interest in India gathering pace after local driver Narain Karthikeyan drove for Jordan in the 2005 season. He is currently a test driver for Williams and has attracted huge sponsorship in India.

The race, will be held in New Delhi. Ahhh...Delhi people are so lucky. I will have to travel all over from Mumbai. But that won’t stop me from going there and viewing the F1 action live.

This is surely great news not only for F1 enthusiasts but for every Indian. F1 would further enhance India's image as a country that's come of age and also attract a lot of tourism and inwards investment.

What do mean by a 1.3 Mega Pixel Camera?

Well i guess most of you must be knowing what it means...but for those dummies like me who knew megapixels but not in the context of cameras here it goes...

Consider a size 1280 pixels x 1024 pixels if u multiply that u get 1310720 pixels which is 1.3 mega pixel. So in short a 1.3 mega pixel camera means one which can capture photos of maximum size 1280 px x 1024 px.

A pixel is a dot of light and a megapixel is one million of these dots.

VGA is a resolution that means 640 pixels across and 480 pixels tall, resulting in an image that's 1/3 of a megapixel. So, a 1MP picture has three times as many dots making up the image. If the two pictures were of the same image, the 1MP version would usually have better detail.

Well dats a short lesson for all you dummies (lol) :)

Search for Music Riskier than Porn?

Search categories related to music and technology continue to be among the most dangerous, according to a new McAfee report. I don't know how to react, to be happy about it or sad.

In its 'The State of Search Engine Safety' report, McAfee points out that one of the riskiest terms to search for on the Web is 'screensavers'. So I advice use those inbuilt screensavers, having beautiful girls on your desktop 24 X 7 was never a good idea.

SiteAdvisor even says that music- and technology-related Web sites have a negative impact on computers, since they often leave spyware and other malware, which could lead to a massive increase in the amount of spam generated. So now you know, the root cause of your spam filled mail-box.

Interestingly, the study revealed that while browsing porn Web sites through search engines carries an approximately 9 percent risk of infecting PCs with spyware, adware, and spam; the risk quotient jumps to nearly 19 percent when searching digital music Web sites. Other sites found to harm computers are those related to electronic gadgets, and those that offer background wallpapers.

The study further found that queries related to file-sharing software such as 'BearShare', 'LimeWire', and 'Kazaa' posed a significant risk for computers. In fact, 'BearShare' was found to be the riskiest search term, with over 46 percent of search results marked as dangerous.

So now you know which sites to browse without risking your PC (just kidding).
